Wine words, decoded
The tricky terms on the list, in plain English.
- Dry
- Not sweet. Has nothing to do with your mouth feeling dry — it just means the sugar fermented away.
- Brut
- The label word for dry sparkling wine. Most bubbly you order is Brut.
- Tannins
- That grippy, mouth-drying feel in red wine (like strong black tea). Comes from grape skins and oak.
- Body
- How heavy the wine feels — light is like skim milk, full is like whole milk.
- Oaked / Buttery
- Aged in oak barrels, adding vanilla, toast and a creamy texture. Classic in California Chardonnay.
- Acidity / Crisp
- The mouth-watering zing. High-acid wines taste fresh and pair great with food.
- Blanc de Blancs
- French for 'white from whites' — sparkling made only from white grapes.
- Crémant
- French sparkling wine made the Champagne way, but outside Champagne. Same technique, friendlier price.
- Meritage
- An American name (rhymes with 'heritage') for a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet, Merlot and friends.
- Bordeaux Blend
- A mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and/or Malbec.
- Right Bank
- The Merlot-heavy side of Bordeaux (St-Émilion, Pomerol). Usually softer and plusher.
- Old Vine
- Wine from older vines (often 50+ years) that make fewer, more concentrated grapes.
- Cuvée
- A special blend or batch — often the winery's chosen best.
- Reserve
- Usually the winery's higher-end bottling, aged longer or from better barrels.
- DOC
- Italy's official stamp guaranteeing where a wine is from and how it was made.
- Vintage
- The year the grapes were picked.
- Off-dry
- Just a touch of sweetness — great with spicy food.
