Bar talk, decoded
Words you'll hear at the bar, in plain English.
- Neat
- Straight from the bottle into the glass. No ice, no mixer.
- On the rocks
- Poured over ice.
- Up
- Shaken or stirred with ice, then strained into a stemmed glass with no ice.
- Barrel Pick
- A specific barrel Champions Run hand-selected — you can't get this exact bourbon anywhere else.
- Bitters
- A few drops of concentrated herbal flavor. Like salt and pepper for cocktails.
- Sweet vermouth
- A lightly sweet, herbal fortified wine used in a Manhattan.
- Luxardo cherry
- A dark, rich Italian cherry — nothing like the bright red kind.
- Cointreau
- A clear orange liqueur. The secret ingredient in margaritas and Cosmos.
- Simple syrup
- Sugar dissolved in water. It sweetens a drink without graininess.
- Cask / Barrel Strength
- Bottled without adding water, so it's stronger than usual. Sip slowly!
- Small Batch
- Blended from a smaller number of barrels for a more distinct flavor.
- Single Malt
- Scotch from one distillery made only from malted barley. Blended mixes several.
- Blanco / Reposado / Añejo
- Tequila age: unaged / rested 2–12 months / aged 1–3 years. Older = smoother.
- Peated / Smoky
- Scotch made with barley dried over peat fires. Tastes like a campfire.
- N.A.
- Non-alcoholic.
- Mule
- A drink made with ginger beer and lime, often served in a copper mug.
